Well Abode: Creating a healthy home environment

Have you ever considered how the environment inside your home directly affects your health? The Butler Electric team can assist with creating a healthy home that is low in electromagnetic pollution. We recently sat down with West Michigan Building Biologist Lisa Tiedt to discuss her company, Well Abode. We partner with Well Abode to help their clients minimize problematic symptoms through creating a healthier home environment.

Lisa is a certified Building Biology Environmental Consultant (BBEC) and Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist (ERMS) through the International Institute for Building Biology® & Ecology. Her organization, Well Abode, implements the Principles of Building Biology® to help her clients create healthy living spaces and sleep sanctuaries. They address things like indoor air quality, tap-water pollutants, and hazards posed by electromagnetic radiation.

Listen in on our conversation with Lisa:

What is a Building Biologist? What do you do?

A Building Biologist looks at any building holistically and can evaluate it for things that directly impact the health of the people who live or work or learn within that dwelling. Very specifically, that means indoor air quality (typically a combination of mold, gasses and chemicals), electromagnetic pollution, and water quality.

What are some common symptoms experienced by your clients?

Most often my clients are experiencing sleep issues, allergy or respiratory issues such as hay fever, eczema & sinusitis, recurrent headaches, colds, flu-like symptoms, heart issues, behavioral issues with children, or chronic pain. These people often report feeling markedly better when they leave their home.

What role can an electrician play in creating a healthier home?

Electricians can have a huge impact on the health of the home by the way the electrical plan is developed and the caliber of the work that is performed with both new construction or fixed with existing homes. National Electric Code (NEC) violations can pose health risks from fire and shock as well as measurable, elevated electromagnetic exposure.

Examples of this include:

  • Correct NEC wiring errors that previous electrical installments may have inadvertently created

  • Install dirty electricity filters

  • Add ethernet cables to hardwire your gaming system, office, or TV — resulting in a more stable and secure internet connection with reduced exposure to radio frequencies

Overall, this creates a calmer and more healing environment in your house.
